Leopold McClintock to James Clark Ross (20/Feb/18xx)
2 Gardiners Place
Dublin 20th Febry
My dear Sir,
I would have answered your letter of the 6th instant by return of post, but that I have been in daily expectation of my appointment. altho’ I have not yet received it there can be but little doubt of its arrival in the course of a few days: I cannot however any longer refrain from writing to thank you most sincerely for your recommendation of me to Captain Austin, to which I shall mainly owe it, should I be so fortunate as to get a command.
I trust your health may soon be restored by the present mild weather, and that you will visit London occasionally whilst we are fitting out; that I may not only have the pleasure of seeing you, but of profiting by your kindly counsel and experience. Should you not be in London when I join my ship, I will write you to inform you of my appointment, and of the nature of the preparations going forward at Woolwich.
I remain my dear Sir
very sincerely yours
F. L. M:Clintock
